Fireworks are dangerous because they are easy for amateurs to mishandle, possibly resulting in burns, fires, injuries and even death. The National Fire Protection Association reported eight civilian deaths and 40 injuries from fireworks in 2011.
The association says that on July 4 in a usual year, the number of fires reported is substantially higher than at any other time. Fireworks account for 40 percent of these fires, exceeding other fire causes. Fireworks by their very nature are unpredictable and unsafe and are best handled by professionals. Public displays take place under controlled conditions and are run by professionals. However, attendees should never pick up remaining fireworks; they can still be active.
