The pancreas rests between the stomach and the spine on the back side of the abdomen. The liver is just above the pancreas. The spleen is also near the pancreas.
The larger end of the pancreas, called the head, is oriented toward the right side of the body. The narrow pancreatic duct goes toward the left side of the body and connects to the first section of the small intestine, called the duodenum. The duodenum curves around the pancreas. The pancreas is a flat gland about 6 inches long. It helps control blood sugar levels in the body as a part of the digestive process.
