What Are Some Earth Facts for Kids?
One interesting Earth fact that kids should know is that Earth is the only planet with an atmosphere that contains 21 percent oxygen. It is also the only planet known to contain life. The Earth is the third planet from the sun and the fifth largest planet in the solar system.
Earth has a unique atmosphere that blends just the right elements to allow life to flourish. The atmosphere also protects the Earth from falling meteors, which burn up before they reach the surface. Most of the surface of the Earth is not visible from space due to clouds of mist and water vapor. There is so much water on the planet that it is sometimes called the "ocean planet."
There are four seasons on Earth: spring, summer, fall and winter. When it is summer in the north half of the planet, it is winter in the southern half. When viewed from the moon, the Earth goes through the same phases that the moon does.
If a tunnel existed that went from one side of the planet to the other, it would take a person 42 minutes to fall to the other side. It takes light approximately eight and a half minutes to travel from the sun to the Earth.
