Earth has been hit by asteroids many times throughout its history. Space.com states there were 26 observed explosions attributed to asteroid strikes between the years 2000 and 2013.
Chelyabinsk, Russia experienced a 600-kiloton meteor strike that left the area devastated and over 1,000 people injured in February 2013. The energy of an impact typically ranges between one and 600 kilotons. In comparison, the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945 only had 15 kilotons of energy. The most famous asteroid strike, according to How Stuff Works, is that which hit Earth 65 million years ago and wiped out the dinosaurs.
