Hurricanes, cyclones, thunderstorms and tornadoes fall under the different types of weather disturbances. These are some of the most frequently occurring weather disturbances throughout the world. They are also referred to as natural disasters, as they are capable of wreaking havoc on roads, power lines and buildings.
Tropical cyclones are classified as tropical storms, tropical depressions and typhoons. When a tropical cyclone occurs in the part of the Northwest Pacific Ocean that is west of the dateline and reaches wind speeds of at least 74 mph, it is called a typhoon. If a tropical cyclone of that intensity occurs in the North Atlantic, in the Northeast Pacific east of the dateline or the South Pacific east of the 160th meridian east, it is called a hurricane.
In some cases, weather disturbances may cause severe weather conditions. Tropical cyclones tend to produce strong winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding. Thunderstorms, which kill more people than hurricanes and tornadoes, produce thunder, lightning and sometimes hail. Violent storms such as tornadoes and hurricanes are equally destructive.Learn more about Storms
