Wood is often used as the framework for buildings. The types of wood used in construction include hardwoods, such as oak, and softwoods, such as pine. Cedar is often used for roofing shingles or siding.
Many musical instruments, especially string instruments and woodwinds, are made out of fine woods such as maple or ebony. Furniture is also made out of fine wood. Medicines are derived from plants such as digitalis and valerian.
