As of April 2014, John Glenn is not dead, he is still alive. According to Biography, Glenn was born on July 18, 1921 in Cambridge, Ohio. In 1962, aboard "Friendship 7," he became the first American to orbit the Earth.
In 1942, John Glenn joined the Naval Aviation Cadet Program and entered the American war effort. The following year, he was sent to the Pacific where he flew 59 combat missions during World War II. He also went on 90 missions during the Korean War. John Glenn was the backup pilot and astronaut for Alan B. Shepard Jr. and Virgil I. Grissom, both of whom made the first U.S. suborbital flights.
