Hurricane Katrina took place in Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia and Alabama. It initially started out as a tropical storm over the Bahamas on Aug. 23, 2005. On Aug. 25, it reached southern Florida and was classified as a Category 1 hurricane.
On Aug. 26, the storm intensified, and by Aug. 28, Katrina was classified as a Category 5 hurricane. With winds blowing at 175 miles per hour, Hurricane Katrina turned north towards the Louisiana coast and on Aug. 29, 2005, the hurricane slammed into Biloxi and Gulfport, Miss. It caused extensive damage and loss of life across a vast area from Louisiana and Mississippi into Florida, Georgia and Alabama.
