Hurricane Katrina occurred between Aug. 23, 2005 and Sept. 3, 2005. It was at its peak strength and maximum level of destruction on Aug. 28, 2005. The strongest winds reached 175 mph, making it a Category 5 storm and one of the most powerful hurricanes in history.
Because of the force and the amount of rain, the city of New Orleans' levees could not hold the water. By the morning of August 30, 80 percent of the city was under water. Though the majority of the devastation occurred in Louisiana and Mississippi. Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Kentucky were also largely affected. Hurricane Katrina caused an estimated $108 billion in damage, and nearly 2,000 people lost their lives.
