Indonesia generally is considered to the country with the most earthquakes. Indonesia possesses this distinction because it lies in what is considered to be a highly active seismic zone.
Most of the planet's earthquakes take place along two specific areas, the continental and oceanic plates. An earthquake occurs when the rock underlying faults associated with these and other plates suddenly shifts. This results is a sudden and violent release of energy that in turn causes what are known as seismic waves. These seismic waves result in the shaking of the ground, sometimes causing significant damage and loss of life in the process.
