Scientists and other academics developed the metric system to provide a universal set of measurements that could replace the different systems in use around Europe. The system features standard base units, such as meters for length, grams for weight and liters for volume. It bases larger and smaller units on powers of 10 and indicates them with prefixes such as kilo- (thousand), mega- (million), centi- (hundredth) and milli- (thousandth). Although the United States recognizes the metric system, it has not adopted it as the standard for measurements.
