Jade is usually a rich, green color, but it can also appear in orange, yellow, lavender, brown, black, gray and white. A single piece of jade can feature more than one color, however solid green gems are typically more valuable than others.
Jade gemstones are classified as either nephrite or jadeite. Their physical properties are similar, but they differ in chemical composition and color. Nephrite appears deeper green or a gray-green. Sometimes it contains white, yellow or red hues. Jadeite is more rare than nephrite. It comes in green like nephrite, and also in a variety of other colors including: white, pink, red, black, brown and lavender.
