Coconuts grow in tropical climates that are frost free, such as those in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Pacific region. In the United States, coconuts grow in Hawaii and the southern tip of Florida.
Coconuts form and grow on coconut palm trees, the largest of which grow from 50 to 80 feet tall. All coconut trees have thin trunks and large, graceful leaves that may be 15 to 17 feet in length. Coconut fruit has a very hard outer shell and white meat beneath it, the part that is most commonly eaten. Below the white meat is a hollow center, the storage place for coconut milk.
