As of February 2015, a picture of the kidneys can be found on the WebMD site in the Kidney Disease section. It shows the location of the kidneys within the body, as well as a close up and cross section of the left kidney.
The purpose of the kidneys is to filter blood and excrete waste products from protein metabolism and muscle contraction in the form of urine. This is accomplished within each kidney via approximately 1 million nephrons that separate urine from the blood. Urine is collected in the kidney pelvis that drains down the ureters and into the bladder.
