Full Answer

In the 1990s, astronaut Daniel Brandenstein claimed that the Luxor Sky Beam could be seen from the space shuttle. While this light may not be viewable in space, it can be spotted in the sky from a distance of 100 miles. In 2008, the hotel halved the number of operating lamps, somewhat diminishing the light's brightness. The Luxor Sky Beam is a nightly beacon to the masses of insects in the region, which in turn draw out clouds of bats and birds to feast above the strip.
