If a tree is currently bearing fruit, examining its fruit can be one of the easiest ways to identify the tree. For this reason, fruit is one of the first things to look for when trying to determine the species of a particular tree.
While most people can recognize trees whose fruit is commonly eaten, a trained observer should be able to identify a wide range of trees based on their fruit. It is worth noting that many kinds of fruit look similar, especially when they are not fully ripe. Therefore, it is also worth checking a tree’s leaves, height, geographic location and general shape in order to make a positive identification. This is especially important if attempting to determine whether an unfamiliar fruit is safe to eat.
