There are a variety of ways to conserve water, including making adjustments to appliances for greater efficiency and changing some personal habits, such as taking short showers. Some changes may be relatively major, but they will result in greater water conservation.

  • Buy High-Efficiency Appliances
  • A low-flow or dual-flush toilet can make a huge difference in the amount of water even one person consumes on a daily basis. Other high-efficiency appliances, such as low-flow showerheads or high-efficiency dishwashers, can be helpful as well.

  • Reduce Consumption
  • Conservation can be as simple as not using too much water. Reducing the amount of time spent in the shower or turning off the tap while soaking dishes can be surprisingly effective.

  • Make Adjustments to Pipes and Appliances
  • Leaky toilets and plumbing pipes are unnecessarily wasteful. Checking to make sure all these elements are properly sealed and functional can save several gallons of water a year.

  • Reuse Dishes
  • Reducing the amount of dishes that need to be washed helps conserve water, either by reducing the amount of water that gets used in hand washing or by increasing the amount of time between dishwasher cycles.

  • Use Efficient Gardening Techniques
  • Grassy lawns and other outdoor garden areas can be huge areas of water waste. Those who live in areas without a lot of rainfall may want to consider switching to plants that require less water, such as native shrubs and even cacti.
