Why Is My Blood Thin?

According to New Health Guide, thin blood is due to insufficient platelets in the blood. This condition is also called thrombocytopenia, and it can be caused by pregnancy or an infection.

New Health Guide explains that platelets can be destroyed more quickly than they reproduce. This problem can occur when the liver removes too many platelets or the bone marrow does not produce the sufficient amount.

According to New Health Guide, some of the most common symptoms include continual bleeding instead of scabbing of wounds, nosebleeds, bleeding of gums and frequent bruising of the skin. Severe thinning of blood can also result in vomiting of blood and the presence of blood in urine. New Health Guide recommends consulting with a physician if these symptoms are experienced for proper evaluation and treatment.

According to New Health Guide, people with thin blood should regulate their intake of foods high in salicylates and omega-3 because they can worsen the condition. Examples of food rich in salicylates include herbs and spices that include curry, ginger, thyme, cayenne, cinnamon and paprika. Strawberries, grapes, cranberries, oranges and blueberries are also rich in salicylates. Honey, wine, vinegar and peppermints should be avoided because they are also salicylate-rich. New Health Guide explains that fishes rich in omega-3, such as salmon, tuna and mackerel, may cause less clotting of blood and must be avoided.
