Most ants range in size between 5 and 15 millimeters long, but certain species are as small as 1 to 2 millimeters, while others can grow as long as 30 millimeters. All ants are thin-bodied with three distinct body regions that constrict between the head, thorax and abdomen.
While the majority of ant species are brown in color, there are also red ants, black ants and yellow ants. Yellow ants are also referred to as citronella ants, due to the fact that they release a citrus-scented odor when they sense danger. The aroma is most prevalent when the insects are crushed.
