One benefit of hydropower, or hydroelectricity, is that it is a green source of energy, meaning it does not create any pollutants or greenhouse gases, which cause global warming and environmental change. It is also renewable and therefore a reliable source of energy, as long as there is running water.
Hydroelectricity is a domestic source of energy, meaning each country can generate its own energy. This decreases fluctuations in price and promotes reliability of electrical systems. Hydroelectricity is also a flexible source of energy because hydro plants can increase water flow and electricity production or decrease water flow and electricity production quickly and easily. When hydroelectricity requires the creation of a dam, this creates reservoirs for either recreational purposes or for drinking water.
