Baby pandas are known as cubs. Female pandas carry their babies for about 5 months, and have no more than two cubs at a time. Cubs are extremely small when they are born, weighing less than six ounces.
Pandas are found in the wild only in China, inhabiting rugged isolated terrain around the central part of the country. There are estimated to be only about 1,864 pandas remaining in the wild, plus over 300 in captivity. These creatures live, on average, for about 20 years in a natural habitat. Pandas weigh around 300 pounds, and can grow to more than 5 foot tall. While these bears are still physically omnivorous, they prefer to eat bamboo, a relatively indigestible substance. They therefore need close to 30 pounds of it on a daily basis.
