In 2011, the eastern cougar was declared extinct by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. That same year the western black rhino of West Africa was declared to have been hunted to extinction
Though it hadn't been seen in 30 years, it wasn't until 2012 that the Japanese river otter was declared extinct. Lonesome George, the last known Pinta Island tortoise died in June that year. In 2013, the Cape Verde giant skink, the Formosan clouded leopard of Taiwan and the Scioto madtom, a species of fish, were all declared extinct. In 2014, the Bermuda saw-whet owl was declared extinct.
