A cross between a Yorkshire terrier and a shih tzu is called a shorkie tzu by the American Canine Hybrid Club. It may also be called a yorkie tzu or a shorkie.
The shorkie tzu is recognized by the Designer Dogs Kennel Club, the Dog Registry of America, the International Designer Canine Registry and the Designer Breed Registry, in addition to the ACHC. In order to be considered a hybrid breed or designer breed by these clubs, the shorkie tzu must have a purebred parent from each contributing breed. Some clubs recognize F2 and F3 animals, which have shorkie tzu parents instead of one Yorkshire terrier and one shih tzu parent.
