Where Do Wild Horses Live?
Last Updated Apr 7, 2020 8:03:41 PM ET

In North America, wild horses are found on the islands off the Atlantic coast and in other areas in the United States. Some of the states they are found in include Arizona, Montana, Utah, New Mexico, and North Dakota.
Horses are not counted in every area in which they live so no one is really sure how many are left. They are protected under the Wild Free Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971 and they are considered to be a symbol of the pioneer spirit of the American people. Wild horses have roughly 40 million acres of land set aside for them, so they may continue to run free.
