The best way to catch a squirrel is to use a baited, no-kill trap with whole peanuts as the bait. Whole peanuts with a bit of peanut butter seem to be the best choice for catching squirrels; however, other seeds and nuts, such as walnuts and almonds, can also be used as bait with great success.
To set up the trap, it must be placed near the squirrel's burrow and securely tied to the ground. The bait is placed inside and then it is just a matter of waiting for the squirrel to enter and trip the trap. The traps must be checked every day, twice a day, for any caught squirrels. The Department of Fish and Game has currently stated that all traps should be checked on a daily basis and all animals should be removed each day.
If setting up a live trap and the nut-and-seed bait does not work then it will be necessary to call a wildlife management company and let them trap the squirrel. It is also important to remember that other animals, including neighborhood pets, can get trapped in these cages, so poison or other dangerous tools should never be used.
