Full Answer

Typical specimens are 18 to 26 inches long, although some may reach up to 49 inches in length. Three longitudinal stripes run down the bodies of most eastern garter snakes. The snake is similar in appearance to the ribbon snake, although not as slender. Garter snakes generally make their homes in hillside, meadow, woodland or marsh areas and prefer habitats near a permanent source of water, like a stream, lake, pond or even a ditch.
