Advice for raising baby possums, including how to keep them warm and what to feed them, is listed on the Rainbow Wildlife Rescue and Opossum.org websites. Animal rescue and rehabilitation agencies strongly recommend that unlicensed people should not raise possums on their own.
In some states, it may be illegal to raise or possess native wildlife, such as opossums, without a permit. Possums should only be cared for by those who are specially trained. Young possums require round-the-clock care and a specialized diet. On top of being difficult to raise, possums do not make good house pets. They are often destructive, with their constant climbing and chewing on furniture, and they sometimes omit a foul-smelling odor.
