A teacup Yorkie is a popular term for a Yorkshire terrier that is smaller than the American Kennel Club standard of 4 to 7 pounds at full adult size. The average adult size for a teacup Yorkie is between 1 and 3 pounds.
Yorkshire terriers are classified as a toy breed by the AKC; however, labeling a Yorkie as a toy Yorkie usually indicates that the dog is smaller than the standard breed size. Teacup or toy Yorkies can also be referred to as miniature Yorkies, mini Yorkies and micro Yorkies. Yorkie breeders use any of these terms interchangeably when describing smaller than average Yorkies.
