Apples are a food that squirrels enjoy. Squirrels eat nuts, seeds, lichens, buds, mushrooms, roots, pine cones, leaves, twigs, bark, black walnuts, oranges, avocados and apricots as well. Dried corn on the cob is a favorite food despite the fact that it can harbor mold that can harm them.
With the exception of flying squirrels, who are known to devour birds, eggs and insects, most squirrels are vegetarians and primarily herbivores. Squirrels prefer a diet of fruits, herbs and nuts; however, when presented with brightly colored vegetables, such as yellow squash, broccoli, carrots or peas, they can be persuaded to eat their vegetables.
