Squirrel monkeys live in the rain forests and wetlands in Central and South America, and have been introduced into Florida. There are five species of squirrel monkeys in the world, two of which are listed as vulnerable and may face extinction.
Squirrel monkeys live in large, organized groups that can number up to 500 in some areas. They depend on one another for protection and they gather depending on the roles within their groups. The males will hang around with males and teen squirrel monkeys tend to hang around with others of their own age.
Squirrel monkeys are omnivores and eat a variety of items from tree frogs to fruit. They get their water from the foods they eat or from small puddles that form on the ground.
