Spirit bears, also known as the Kermode bear, live in the rainforest along Canada's western coast. The Kermode bear is actually a black bear born with a recessive gene that makes the fur white. The native people of the Canadian coast nicknamed the bear "spirit bear" due to its rarity and beauty, never hunting or even speaking much about the white bear.
There is one spirit bear in captivity at the British Columbia Wildlife Park. An abandoned cub that hasn't had success with relocation is the only spirit bear currently in captivity, although animal rights groups have protested for the bears release into the wild.
