What Is the Smallest Mammal?

The hog-nosed bat, also known as the bumblebee bat, is the smallest mammal known to man, weighing in at a miniscule 2 grams or less. This tiny, winged mammal carries its light weight in a very small body that tends to not exceed measurements of 33 millimeters long from head to rear end.

Formally described to science for the first time in 1974, the bumblebee bat is found in Southwest Asia, mostly in parts of Thailand and Myanmar, where its habitat is declining quickly enough to have the animal classified as endangered. This tiny bat is roughly the size of a bumblebee, which is where it gets its common name of bumblebee bat.
