Adult English coonhounds usually stand between 21 and 27 inches in height and weigh between 40 and 65 pounds. The dog's deep chest and strong lungs combined with its well developed but lean musculature allows it to live an active, athletic lifestyle.
Due to their activity levels, English coonhounds are generally not suited for apartment life. They do best when given long, daily walks and can become neurotic or destructive if denied this. As intelligent, athletic dogs with a superb sense of smell, English coonhounds are natural hunters that may chase after an interesting scent without proper leashing and training.
