A silver German shepherd is a purebred German shepherd that has a silver or gray color to its coat. Silver is considered an acceptable coat color by the American Kennel Club.
Historically, coat color has not been important to German shepherd breeders because working ability and temperament were prioritized. As a result, a variety of colors are found in the breed, including tan, red, liver, black, blue and white. White German shepherds are disqualified from competing with the American Kennel Club, however, and washed-out colors, liver and blue are considered serious faults in show dogs. Silver coloring is usually found with black, blue or liver markings.
