The Siamese cat originated in Thailand, formerly known as Siam, according to Fairydust Siamese Cattery. The cats were held in such high regard in their native Siam that no one except the king and his family could own them.
Historical records indicate that Siamese cats in their native Siam were considered to be temple guardians. If someone of a high rank died, it was common to choose one of the cats to receive the dead person's soul. The cat was taken from the royal household to one of the temples to spend the rest of its life in luxury. It is said the cats ate the finest food from gold plates and reclined on luxurious cushions provided by the dead person's family in an effort to bestow the departed soul with good fortune and blessings.
