An adult dog should be fed twice in a day, but puppies need to be fed up to four times in a day. Adult dogs must be provided with meals in the morning and the evening. For puppies, follow the directions of a veterinarian.
Overfeeding a dog leads to extra weight, which can lead to health problems. However, working dogs, such as cattle dogs, police dogs and guide dogs, may need more food to have the energy to work. Adopted dogs tend to be nervous around food because of being among new people. Training the dog each day will help it learn to eat food when it is offered.
