The offspring of a Shih Tzu and Pomeranian is known by several names including the Shiranian, Shih-Pom, Shih A Pom and Pom-Tzu. Shiranian is the most widely used and recognized name for this designer dog breed.
The Shiranian is a small, fluffy mixture of the regal Shih Tzu and feisty Pomeranian. This toy breed mix can weigh anywhere from 3 to 16 pounds depending on the size of the parents. Their height can range from 7 to 12 inches.
Because both parents are breeds that require extensive grooming to maintain their flowing coats, the Shiranian must have daily grooming unless the owner keeps the dog clipped short. This includes combing through the dense fur with a comb to prevent matting. Many owners of small, long-haired breeds opt for the puppy cut, a close cut on the body and longer lengths on the tail and head.
Because it is a mix of two different breeds, the Shiranian can suffer from any of the known health problems seen in its parents' breeds. This can include spinal problems, eye issues and respiratory ailments from the Shih Tzu and heart problems, dislocated patella and skin disorders from the Pomeranian. It is also suggested that owners keep an eye on their Shiranian's weight and teeth to prevent obesity and tooth decay, problems that are prevalent in both breeds.
