According to About.com, sharks live in the Mediterranean Sea but are seldom seen. Shark attacks in the Mediterranean are extremely rare. Of sharks caught, less dangerous species are more common, such as basking sharks, thresher sharks and dog fish.
However, the BBC states that great white sharks do live in the Mediterranean. Scientists believe that the great whites in this area of the world are actually descended from those that live in the southern Pacific as opposed to the Atlantic. It is hypothesized that pregnant great white sharks swam through warmer waters from Australia to the Mediterranean 450,000 years ago during an ice age.
