In classical Greek, the word salamander translated to fire animal, and referred to the mythical amphibian's supposed immunity for fire. In a culinary setting, the term salamander indicates a culinary broiler with extremely high temperature overhead heating elements and that runs on electric or gas.
The link between salamanders and fires may stem from the ancient mythological beliefs that salamanders felt the need to put out fires, and that they would run into fires if necessary to put them out. The small lizards live primarily in water although they can live on land as well. Those that do live on land inhabit moist areas as they will die if their skin gets dried out. Salamanders often sleep or hibernate in damp logs, and run out from under the logs when the logs are picked up and lit on fire.
