Washing the dog in a mixture containing dishwashing soap, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda can get rid of the skunk smell, suggests the Humane Society of the United States. The dog will also need to be shampooed to wash out these ingredients and leave the dog smelling fresh. It is important to do the washing outside to avoid spreading the skunk smell inside a house.
To get rid of skunk smell from a dog, do the following:
- Create the mixture
- Apply the mixture
- Wash the dog off
Get a bucket, bottle or other object that can hold the mixture. Obtain a teaspoon of dishwashing soap, a quart of hydrogen peroxide (3 percent variety) and a quarter cup of baking soda and combine them all to make the mixture. The mixture needs to be used right away, warns the Humane Society of the United States.
Apply the mixture all over the dog's fur and then rinse it off with water.
After rinsing the dog with water, shampoo the dog, rinse the shampoo off and then dry the dog with a towel.
Instead of using these materials from home, there are commercial sprays that can get rid of skunk smells. One example is Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover, and it can be helpful if the smell needs removed fast.
The reason dogs may get sprayed is that they don't see the skunk's colors as a warning sign and may get too close to the skunk, states Vetstreet.
