Full Answer

Red-kneed tarantulas are sold in the pet trade and are relatively long-lived for arthropods. Females can live up to 30 years in captivity. Even males, which have much shorter lifespans, can live up to 10 years. In the wild, they are preyed upon by birds, moths and lizards. They prey upon large insects, frogs and mice. Although they are carnivorous, they are docile toward humans; although, they may fling barbed hairs or bite when threatened. Despite their intimidating size, their bite is on par with a wasp sting in terms of the danger to humans.
