Drones and immature queens of ants within the genus Solenopsis are red and have wings. These ants are more commonly known as fire ants. Fire ants are capable of injecting a painful toxin as a defense mechanism or as a means of subduing prey.
While most species of ant defend themselves with their mandibles, fire ants have stingers located on their abdomens. The sensation of being stung by a fire ant is similar to a burning feeling, which is how these ants got their common name. Humans can have an allergy to the venom of the fire ant, making some stings potentially fatal. Fire ants are very aggressive and are an invasive species in certain areas, as they force out competing ants.
