What Is a Rat Terrier?

The Rat Terrier is a companion dog originally bred to hunt small game and rodents. This American breed is a cross between Fox Terriers and other types of terriers.

Rat Terriers have playful, alert, happy-go-lucky dispositions and generally get along well with other pets. They are energetic and responsive to training and thrive on activities such as agility training, frisbee and fly ball. Rat Terriers are typically good with children, especially if they have been raised in the same household together.

Rat Terriers can adapt to apartment life, as long as they get adequate exercise that consists of at least 30 to 40 minutes of outdoor activity daily. This breed is long-lived, with a life expectancy of around 15 to 18 years.
