Multiple dog food reviewers agree that Purina Beneful is a low-quality dog food. It contains numerous ingredients considered problematic for dogs, including ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal and added sugar.
Purina Beneful has a relatively low protein content of 31 percent and a high carbohydrate content of 47 percent. Both protein and carbohydrates come from poor-quality sources, such as animal by-products, grain by-products, plant-based glutens and inexpensive, nutrient-devoid fillers, such as wheat flour. Other controversial ingredients include meat and bone meal, which are vague and could come from any source, potentially including euthanized pets or slaughterhouse leftovers.
