Embrace Pet Insurance and Trupanion both cover cataract surgery in dogs. Depending on the insurance plan, some fees, deductibles and co-pays may apply. The coverage may depend on whether the pet showed signs of the cataracts at the beginning of the coverage period.
Although cataract surgery is very common for humans, it is not performed as frequently on dogs. This is due in part to the fact that most cataracts do not fully obstruct a dog's vision, and in part because the surgery is for quality of life, not to save a life. The surgeon uses the same types of tools used for humans and replaces the clouded lens with an artificial one in a procedure under full anesthesia. For blind pets, this surgery can dramatically improve the dog's quality of life.
