Tigers are often killed for sport, spectacle and folk remedies in a practice that has driven the species to the edge of extinction. According to the Guardian, police in the city of Zhanjiang seized 10 dead tigers that were killed as live entertainment for local businessmen.
The prestige of killing a tiger is only one of many reasons the number of wild tigers is declining. Tigers continue to be poached and their pelts mounted as trophies. Various parts of the tiger's anatomy are used in traditional Chinese medicine. According to the Guardian, tiger meat and bones are sometimes given to Chinese officials as gifts by businessmen.
