Blue whales have been hunted by people since the 1700s because of the value of their blubber and body parts. Oil is one of the primary products generated from oil blubber. Blue whales have been used for production of oil used in lamps, candles and various beauty products.

Blue whales are also hunted for food. The oil from their blubber is used to make cooking oils and butter. People also eat the meat from blue whales. The animals also contribute to some fashion products, such as corsets that utilize the bones. Blue whale body parts are used to make some hard goods, such as tools.
