Panda dogs are rough-coat chow chow dogs that have been dyed and groomed to look like miniature panda bears. Hsin Ch'en developed the grooming technique in China.
The chow chow is an ancient Chinese dog breed with a natural bear-like appearance. The rough coat variety of the medium- to large-size dog breed has a long mane of dense, coarse hair around its face and neck. This mane gives the dog's face a panda-like appearance. Hsin Ch'en uses this to his advantage as he transforms each puppy into a panda dog with grooming clippers and animal-safe dyes. The results last about six weeks. Regular maintenance is necessary to maintain the panda-dog look.
