The ornate bichir, whose scientific name is 'Polypterus ornatipinnis,' is a bony fish of the Polypteridae family native to the fresh waters of Central Africa. The species has a yellow and dark brown/black pattern on its body and fins and reaches up to 2 feet in length.
With a lung-like swim bladder and gills, this fish is able to survive outside the water for short periods of time. The specimen bears nine to 11 dorsal spins and two pectoral fins. The ornate bichir is considered one of the most attractive fish in the Bichir group and is very popular among aquarium enthusiasts.
