The oldest horse whose age has been recorded was 62 years old at the time of death. The horse, named Old Billy, pulled barges in canals in England. He was born in 1760 and died in 1822. As of 2014, his preserved skull is on display at the Manchester Museum.
The average lifespan of a horse ranges from 25 to 30 years. Shayne, an Irish draft cross thoroughbred who was living at the Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary in Essex, was thought to be the world's oldest living horse at the time he died in 2013, at the age of 51.
